Deadline Week
Halloween
We are not sending pages in October. :(
Apparently we are planning to do mock election on
Tuesday to create our own election story. We have a team that is going to wotk on it and everything.
Also next week is club photo week and we made posters to advertise it. We decided to do club photos in the fall like we used to.

Bella Vista Game
It's hard to make a deadline when a photo editor and design editor are out TWO FULL DAYS FOR TENNIS SECTIONS during the week we are trying to send pages.
Apparently Kelsey Chrisco won her finals match and is the League Champion in Girls' Tennis Singles. Lauren and Krissy Gage won their Supre Doubles match and have another match at 2.
We are plugging away on the pages, but the progress is slow.

Commander Zoe explaining the Knot Game. We divided the class into two teams. Players grab right hand to another right hand and then left hand to left hand. Each group had approximately 17 team members. The object of the game was to untangle the group.

The Missing Cards
Working on the Mugs
We had a bit of a panic when Kim reported that we had no cards!. She called Shelby who was at tennis all day and she said she had only two there. I kind of freaked out but I eventually found some in the new bag. it's kind of difficult to do what we need to do without cards.
I got up in front of the class and made a speech about all the photographers working harder to improve. Too many are just taking photos and not getting much better. How many "go to" photographers do we really have anyway?
We have targeted the sophomore section and we still have a long way to go to get all the pieces in place.

Lauren and Zoe were here at 9. Kelsey had to work until 11. Shelby gave herself the day off because she had "nothing to do." (What about gathering all the underclass candids for the mugs section?) No idea where Ellen is.
A little after 11 Kelsey came in after work at Starbucks and then Zoe and I disappeared for awhile to take family portraits at Prestige.

e/care meeting at 8:15
No class today: Finals periods one and two
At 8:15 during my first period final we had an online training with an artist at Walsworth in Missouri. It was by phone conference call and direct connection on the computer. We had sent the artist the Radiohead textured piece and we wanted to learn how to do those kinds of textures.
Zoe and Lauren got the technique down and they had were able to get the texture they wanted.
So now truly all the pieces are in place. We just need to execute.

The Database Editor Disk Arrives
This is a very momentous day! The database editor arrived from Walsworth with all our mug names. The process goes like this: All the undergrad mugs and faculty are shot by Lifetouch. At some point all the retake shoots are done and eventually Lifetouch sends a disk with all the photos and names that we send off to the publisher. In less than a week it comes back to us as the Database Editor and from it we can edit the names and then create a text file to flow in the names for each class.
Class time
The staff had to turn in two moments today and they all worked a little better. I started class with the "we have to start getting things done speech;" we are trying to send pages next week. I actually read some of the moments and they are coming along.
After her waterpolo game against Loretto which they lost 6-2, Zoe came back to the room and we figured our how to use the database editor and we even got all the junior names flowed.
Now at day 47 all the pieces are in place where we can actually finish the mugs.
Oh I forgot tomorrow at 8:15 we have an online training with the Walsworth people and hopefully we learn moreabout making the textures we want. I suppose then we will really have ALL the pieces in place.
We shall she how it all goes.
If they really bust it we can still send pages in OCTOBER. Stay tuned
By the way Katie. Where in the heck is the Football spead in the 2008 Odyssey? Football should at least me mentioned in the index doncha think? :) I L-O-V--E complete indexes.

Reese came for 4th period and brought Brian! :) ! She was no able to set up our e appointment to work on textures, but we did discuss what monitor calibrator to buy and what Wacom tablet that the artist at Walsworth use.
Supposedly we are going to get our mugs database editor tomorrow.
We also looked at our Photoshop action from last year and that should be most of what we need to do

Monday Routine
Editors try to get stuff done at 5:30
We started the day going over photo opportunities for the week. Then we talked about selling and creating senior ads now that the ad spec books are done.
The staff has been out and about gathering information. Many are out, some are actually gathering information.
The editors came back at 5:30 and they figured out how to do video ichat on the network using bonjour. Still waiting for actual work to get done.
Spoke with Chantilly's Katie Urban and she informed us that Chantilly will have 80 spreads by Christmas. I'll be excited if we have 60. At this rate we'll be lucky to have 50.
Reese is coming tomorrow and we will see if we can get a session with the Walsworth artists on creating patterns/textures on Photoshop. We are also going to check into getting a monitor calibration thing and a Wacom tablet too.

It's Yearbook Production Season! End of Week One
The countdown is on. Only two weeks until we have pages due. (or at least due for our own deadline) We are shooting to mail pages in October for the second year in a row. I still can't believe we will make it. It's too hard with four of the editorial team involved with sports.
I spoke with my friend Katie Urban from Chantilly on Facebook and we may try to do arrange something fun between the Decamhian staff and the Odyssey staff. If you read this Katie, tell Kendall some of my students all of a sudden started saying "Can I get your number? " and I started cracking up. That was so great at GYE.
In class the editors did a good job about telling them what they needed to accomplish. Quotable Quotes, a Moment, a scoreboard in progress. Then Kelsey said they all had to be back at 2:40 to turn in what they had. A great move.
No one stayed after school and they are not coming in on Saturday. we will see when they get it all done. Still waiting to get the mugs database editor back from Walsworth.
Oh and next weekend Kate is here and it's Zoe's birthday weekend and then that next Friday is when we are supposed to sent pages. To be continued.
The Goal:
16 pages in October
50 total before Thanksgiving
120+ before the holidays.
I wonder what the Odyssey has to get in before the holidays. They obviously knoow more than I do. It's probably MKD cracking the whip!

The editors begin to get super organized :)
During the first part of the period, the editors told the staff what the sports teams would be. Each editor took 3-4 sports and would be helping them find theirbest moments as well as check on their progress.
Ellen had made a check off sheet and also found out who had done the captions Shelby had passed and who still had pictures out to complete.
Then Kelsey split them up into pairs for them to try out the mug section questionnaires.
Zoe missed class because she was having Robert take her senior portraits.

We also received our mug disk from Lifetouch on Tuesday and then FedEXed it off to Walsworth today. Reese couldn't be here so she arranged a Fed Ex pickup.

Blood Drive
Notes to the Staff
We started class with a journal topic on the blood drive and then we gave them time to work on their moments. They now have been assigned to write up a specific moment each week. They also should be typing up their scoreboards in an InDesign file
I sent this out to the staff today:
Staff,
It’s that time of the year again!
The yearbook staff is looking for students with interesting stories that need to be told in the yearbook.
We need freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.
In the past you all have been soooooo helpful in helping us discover these types of stories.
They could be about great accomplishments as well those who have overcome challenges.
Thanks for your help,
Jim
I also sent this:
We also need interesting stories about the faculty too!
Staff,
We are currently moving from the training phase to the the production phase of the 2009 Decamhian (our yearbook for any of you who are new here ).
This means that our writers and photographers will be out interviewing and gathering information. We always put way too much pressure on the fourth period teachers when students come in to interview and ask questions of specific students.
If you can help us out…great, but if you need to turn them away…please do. If we ever become a burden in ANY way, please email me and let me know.
The great support of the staff has definitely been one of the major parts of the success of our yearbook.
Thanks again,
Jim

Mystery guest Saturday
Yearbook Season is Ready to Begin
Training period had ended. Today was our first Saturday and our annual meeting with our beloved mystery guest. She left home at 6:15 her time and I picked her up at 11:15 p.m. We all met in the yearbook room at 9 and got to work immediately banging out the concept. We still loved the theme and decided that we did still want traditional sections. After looking at spreads we loved from the previous three years of Decamhians, we did decide though that we we did not want to continue with the white-space laden look from camp.

Sitting at the table deciding what we want the 2009 Decamhian to be.

Design inspiration. We put stickers on on the designs we loved from the past three years om Decamhians. The Radiohead web site had a great design on the Reckoner remix page.

It will be very interesting how we use this for inspiration. We dolove the colors.

Reese was here (3)
Journal topic 8, photo captioning and then the last opportunity to finish their layouts on the computer. They also spend some time brainstorming possible story ideas especially for the mugs.
Reese came but but there wasn't much for her to do. We talked about using the new mug placement pug in from Walsworth which would allow us to fully pdf the mug layouts.
We are quickly approaching the time when all training will be complete. Scary
From time to time we will have guest bloggers. Today's blogger is Kelsey Eaton, managing editor of the 2009 Decamhian.
This year is going great... well so far. Right now we're entering the awkward stage of our staff merging from training to actually working on the yearbook. Earlier this week I told them their story deadlines, which judging by their faces, I doubt they realized how soon reality was coming. Tomorrow we will have our first late night with both editors and staff. This will be so great since finally we will have others here besides Mr. J, Kim Descalso and I. Which is a good thing since I'm beginning to talk to myself more and more.
Today in class our journal was about keeping the room clean. Being somewhat of an OCD Clean Freak, I find it impossible to completely concentrate with soggy Sour Cream and Onion chips smooshed in the carpet, and just wondering what else might be in the fridge after finding Lauren Shafer's container of white fuzzy strawberries.
Our first deadline is coming up at the end of October, I'm 95% sure that we will make it! Wish us luck!

Journal, Captions, Schedule, Card for the Perfect Blend
It was Monday so we began with a journal topic on the best moment of the Homecoming Week (8).
Then we did a caption on the crowning of Zoe shot by Kim after looking at a couple of compromising dance photos of Micaela Moccetini and Ryan Blaser.
Then we talked about photo opportunities for the week and signed a card we made for Ariel's mother. Then amazingly it was almost 20 til.
Some worked on their layouts on the computer and the rest signed the card that Ellen made.

Stacey, Zoe herself, Claire, and Lauren model their homecoming ZOE shirts. Shelby was home sick.

Homecoming Week
Halls and Rally

Game
Pancake Breakfast
Got to school at about 4:50 to help with the pancake breakfast. When I got to the Social Science hall it was Isabel, Jim Wagner and Sheri, but no other SS department members. We got working and finally everyone started trickling in. However Keith finally arrived at 6:30 and all was well. By the time it was all finished they figured they took in over $1000. Everyone pitched in and it was all a great success
First period: Great participation
All but about seven kids scored the 100 participation points necessary to be able to not take the vocab test. And a whole bunch scored every possible participation point which meant they dressed up on every dress up days and worked each of the four hall sessions.
Hall Viewing
Again I was stuck supervising the line for the Senior Hall. There were only three of us. Me, Kenyon and Mike Gordon. Kenyon disappeared in the crowd. Gordon was nowhere to be found and luckily Jay and Neil came out to help. I have done this same job for three or more years and I hate it. First they need to rotate jobs-you shouldn't have to do the same things over and over. But more importantly if you want to properly supervise the line to stop cutters you need a minimum if 5-7 teachers to do it. Three just leads to frustration. I told myself I wasn't going to get worked up hassling kids, but as soon as they started cutting I had to do something. The worst was the confrontation I had with a sophomore football player who would not get out of line when I caught him cutting. I was getting ready to suspend him when he sort of cooperated. I have not felt that disrespected by a kid in a long time.
I actually snuck away and saw the senior, junior, and sophomore halls. No doubt the junior hall was the best.
While we were standing around during the end of the hall viewing period Kim came by and said something was going on down at the gym and when we got there we found a bunch of kids sucking helium from the unsupervised helium cylinders.
The Rally: A Moment of Chaos and the Juniors Win
I hooked back up with Christine after second period and we were standing at the back of the gym as the rally was set to begin.
Apparently the entire senior class had gathered near the band room and they waited to make a grand entrance after everyone else was seated. Apparently when they came in the junior football players got up and soon there was a huge confrontation in the middle of the gym floor. Kim got pushed, Michele was grabbing kids, Jennifer Dumas got stepped on. It was pandemonium! It took Chief Fears on the mic to get it settled down and then Vera talked and the rally went on.
The cheerleaders cheered, the dance team danced, the soccer and football teams got introduced, the hip hop team did their thing, the underclass royalty were crowned (go Becca and Jeff), the senior royalty were introduced and finally they announced the bleacher poster and hall winners. For some winning the bleacher poster contest and not the halls was more important to a lot of them, so they were happy to win the poster and not that upset that they got second to the juniors on the hall. We were a little concerned that something might break loose when the announcement was made so the teachers gathered around both groups and kept them in line. The juniors had rigged up a tarp and pulleys that they were going to hoist at sometime during the rally that said "Junior Nation." Somehow they redid the posted and they did raise it and it said "Good Job Seniors." At the end everyone seemed to be chanting "Go Cougars." So apparently we had avoided any huge battle at the end.
Lunch: Egg Salad Sandwiches, a tradition
Christine, Shannon Pierce and I went up to social science and had an egg salad sandwich with the huge group that had gathered after the pancake breakfast. We to get ours before Enzo ate all that was left. It is a long standing tradition that they boil eggs during the pcb and then make sandwiches at lunch. I think it grew out of always having eggs left over.
Yearbook: It's a Grind Coffee Drinks
Ariel Raudez's parents own "It's a Grind" on Cirby and her mom offered to come and make us coffee drinks on the day of homecoming. She spent all period making everyone whatever they wanted. it was really fun.

We also tried to debrief the events of the rally with the entire class but only with limited success.
Pregame Maneuvering
I wanted to be sure we had seats for the crowning especially if Gary and Peggy came so I got down to school and set up for chairs on the south side of the berm at the beginning of the JV game. Gary and Peggy and Christine did make it right after half time so it was all good. It had started to sprinkle so I was praying that it would at least hold off until after the parade.
The Parade
I went in and saw the girls waiting in the gm as it had started raining just a bit.

Senior Princesses: Alexa Novak, Tori Edlow, Emily Fox, Zoe Jordan, Amanda Cardoza

The JV game ended and the parade began. What a blessing that it was barely sprinkling.

Sweet car, strange man. What is this Grand Marshall thing all about anyway?!

The Game
from SacBee.com
C.J. Castro ran for a 35-yard touchdown with 2:52 to play, then intercepted a pass with 35 seconds to go to preserve No. 8 Del Campo's 13-9 win over No. 20 Woodcreek on Friday night in Fair Oaks.
The game was a defensive battle as Del Campo (4-0) recovered three fumbles and made two interceptions, and the Timberwolves (2-2) forced seven Cougars fumbles, three of which Woodcreek recovered.
Tommy Murphy's 27-yard field goal with 4:24 to go in the third quarter gave Woodcreek a 9-6 lead.
James Nunley's two-yard run had tied the score 6-6 for Woodcreek in the first quarter shortly after Del Campo's Larry Gasaway returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown.Gasaway had two fumble recoveries and Ryan Dimino one and Jaron Wilson had an interception for Del Campo.
It marked the second week in a row that Del Campo rallied to win. Last week, Castro scored on a five-yard run with 23 seconds left to beat No. 14 Ponderosa 19-14.

College Day
We did another photo for captioning. This one was from soccer. Kim picked it out third period.
I think that this was the day that Zoe game them training on InDesign by creating a layout on my computer hooked up to the projector.
Then as many of the staff that could started creating layouts based on the ones they had pasted up.
