Week Thirteen: Saturday (5): November 15, 2008

Lauren was back and all editors came in to plan and strt the next deadline. Lauren has eight spreads of Fall spreads to go.

In looking over the ladder we can definitely get over 80 in the first week of December and 120 by Christmas Break.

Christine called and reminded us the new Patriot Park was being dedicated today and Ellen went over to take pictures and interview.

They also picked teams for the staff Olympics (?)

Planning the staff Olympics

Ellen actually wrote the story on Patriot's Park (impressive), Kelsely left for work at 12:30. AT Zoe's insistance we left a little before one.

As I look at the calendar, we probably won;r be her on December as they are all taking SAT IIs and I am taking the AP course. So our next full day in here may be on December 15!

Visit by the Benecians (2008 Pride Editors)
Sending Pages (3)
We sent 22 pages for a total of 54.

Lauren arrived a little after seven to finish her pages, but by the time first period was over she was off to her Section semifinals tennis match. (She wound up getting fourth)

The editors worked all first and second periods to get the changes made and by lunch we were pretty close.

At lunch we had the English Department luncheon with PE and that went well with my HUGE salad.

At a little after 12 I got a call from the office that said that the staff from Benecia and Annette
Fewens were here. It was so great to see them again. I had had Chris and Gwenna in my leadership class at camp and I recognized the others. They definitely want to do an amazing book this year. I was impressed with what they have done for their cover so far. I also like the new direction they have gone with theit theme.

It is always fun to work with another staff that is so hungry to be great. Chris definitely has the drive to do it. Hopefully they felt it was valuable to come and see what we do.

After they left during part of fourth period we finished the pages and actually had them done before fourth was over. The editors were actually gone by 3:30. What a great feeling to actually be caught up. This never happens. But they definitely earned it.

Early Thursday
Working on Deadline (3)

Trying to have the 22 pages we are trying to send ready to go. Freshman mugs (12); Faculty mugs (6); Sports (4).

It's an early Thursday and everyone is a little wiped out from yesterday's events. Lauren has been at tennis Sections all day and won both her doubles matches so she and Krissy Gage are in the semis.

We stayed until almost 5:30 and it looks like the pages are going to get done.To be over 50 at Thanksgiving for us would be pretty amazing.

Lockdown!
Working on Deadline (3)
Water Polo Banquet

This will be Day One of the three day cycle. All elements must be on the pages we are sending if we plan to send them on Friday.

Lockdown!
First Period 9:10 a.m.

Rebecca Josephson and Jeff Walton were in the middle of their Scarlet Letter chapter presentation at a little after nine when the long continuous bell sounded and we were under lockdown. After about 20 minutes we found this on KCRA.com.

Del Campo High School is in lockdown after someone called 911 to say someone brought a gun on campus, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday. The call came from a gas station near the school, Sgt. Tim Curran said.

It is currently 10:22 and we are still here. After a few minutes into second period two uniformed officers escorted Tiffany Smorleitz and Cierra Byers as they were coming in to second period.

At 10:23 we heard a helicopter flying overhead.

New info.
Officials are going through a roster to see if the name the 911 caller gave the dispatch matches with any of the enrolled students. If the name matches up with student at school, Curran said, deputies will take a dog inside to sniff for a weapon. Curran said all the students are safe and that extra resources have been called in. Stay tuned to KCRA 3 and refresh KCRA.com for the latest information as it develops.

From Channel 13

Del Campo High Placed On Lockdown

FAIR OAKS (CBS13) ― A Fair Oaks school is on lockdown after authorities received an anonymous call saying a specific student had a gun on campus and was planning to target certain students.

Del Campo High School was placed on lockdown shortly after school started, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Dept.

Sgt. Tim Curran told CBS13 that a call came in around 9:00am from a male naming a student on campus who had a gun and a plan to target fellow students. Deputies have determined the call came from the area of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Manzanita.

The school's website says "All students are safe and accounted for."
The school and law enforcement are asking that parents not come to the school to pick up their kids. But if they must, they are asked to go to Barrett Middle School until the situation is under control. The school will staff at Barrett Middle School to answer questions.

Del Campo High's lockdown procedure means students have to stay in class or go to the nearest classroom. Teachers turn off the lights, pull the blinds and have the students stay as still as possible.

According to the school website, about 1900 students are enrolled at the school. It also employs 86 staff members.

At one point Kim Zeltvay and two officers came in to room 17 and asked if anyone went by the name Bob or Bobby. They got mad when we tried to take a photo and then left. A bit later we looked out the window and saw the dog and several officers.

It is currently 11:13. Hour two.

Apparently parents and news crews have gathered in front of the school and there are sherrifs everywhere

Zoe on guard.

Chilling during the lockdown.

At 12:50.
The sheriff's office has completed its search and the lockdown has been lifted. We will be going directly into lunch and then will resume the regular school day. If students feel it is necessary to leave, they must be checked out by a parent at the table that has been setup in front of the school.

At approximately 9 a.m. this morning the Sheriff's office received an anonymous call that a student may have brought a weapon on campus. The campus was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure while Sheriff's officers conducted a search on campus. The search resulted in no weapons being found.

Classes will be held tomorrow as normal. If you have any information about today's incident please come to the office and speak with us.

They were released at 12:07.

No School, But We Are in Yearbook

We had a huge crowd today as we try to finish freshmen mugs and and faculty as well as a couple of sports. With tennis and banquets and jobs I am not totally sure we can get it all done by Friday, but we are sure going to try.

I have realized that we need to institute a three-day process for preparing pages. On day three all elements of a spread must be on the page. Then on day two we will do all the proofing. This will have us ready for day one which is the day we plan to send the page.

Zoe, Shelby, Ellen, Kelsey and Lauren. Also Kim, Alyssa, Alexis, Meghan S., Gina, Ariel, and Jessica K. For a total of 12.

In a major accomplishment we actually determined what the freshmen profiles would be and even got both interviews done. They finally got LuLu's phone number after a great effort.

Good Bye Mom's Green Car…the Civic

I left during part of the day to help Robert sell the green car. He actually got $1500 for it. Not a totally bad idea to sell it, but he will regret having nothing if and when her comes back.

Lauren almost got two full spreads done today,

Sending Pages (2)

Theoretically we are going to send pages today.

But it all turned out to be crazy. I never got to proof them properly before Reese came. I had to leave for over an hour after lunch to get a new pink slip for the Honda and then I needed to help Carolyn Delgado with pictures for the banquet.

Then as forth ended, and Lauren was trying to package the spreads she has created we had a huge problem with the white text on the texture. Have many work arounds we finally discovered that it had something to do with the packaging process and we actually wound up rebuilding the entire spread. Lauren was freaking out because Rod and Mary Kay were wanting her to get to tenis practice. Eventually we let her leave so no one would gete any more upset.

By the time the pages were done and sent we realized on head line was wrong and one set of pagenubers had not been changed. So much for teh Decamhia attention to detail.

Week Twelve: Saturday (4), November 8, 2008

Week Twelve: Saturday (4) , November 8, 2008

We came in at 9. Actually I came in at about 7:30 to putter and get some research papers corrected. Lauren came in first and then Shelby and finally Zoe. Kelsey slept in apparently and Ellen finally made it in too.

The crazy part of the day was when I realized that Shelby and Ellen were planning to leave early to go to a concert. Shelby was actually going to leave even earlier to go and "clean her room." Needlesstosay I wasn't happy. I do not want to be here any more than anyone else does, but we should all stay together as a team. No one should have the privilege to come and go as they please without even asking. I don't no mind when things like this come up, but I like it when they have the nerve to talk with me about it and work it out BEFORE they slip out on the day. It shoul neve be a problem as long as there is communication.
We worked it out and Shelby even got some important work done on the HOMECOMING story.

Late in the day we discovered that we had not set up the faculty pages properly and Zoe would have to make the pictures bigger so the teaching assignment info could be included.

It looks like we will get juniors done and for sure (one!) sports spread. That will put us at least at 30 total on Monday. They are talking about coming in for a couple of hours on Sunday, but we will see.

Early in the day Kelsey started making calls and other staffers did show up.

I actually got a bunch of research papers correct along with ohter papers. So from that point of view I enjoy all I get done on Saturdays. i also watched a lot of the LSU-Alabama and Penn State-Iowa games on the TV.

Last Water polo game

We took more group shots at lunch, but for he first time some the groups did ot show because their adviser was nit there.

I took half a day off and had Danielle Duarte as my sub and went to Zoe
s Section water polo against McClatchy. We go off to a good start, scored first and even lead 2-1, but we got into foul trouble and lost 10-6. Both Zoe and Delgado didn't make it to the end of the game.

We took three group shots at lunch. It's all going quite well actually.

Since the day was short, we just worked in class. I am not sure whether they have a freshman profile still! I worked much of the period on my WASC presentation.

Obama is Officially the President-Elect. Like His Politics or Not It Is Still Quite the Historic Day!

Everyone seemed tired and many were missing. We are trying to get back in the groove to finish junior, freshman and faculty mugs. Not having much luck. I actually fell asleep on the couch for a few minutes. It is something about the change in the weather. It has snapped cold.

Stayed until after six. Shelby was scheduled to drive to some shady part of town to take pictures of the boxer guy and evetually I mad Zoe go with her. She was ready to do something more interesting than Water Polo drama.

Election Day
Sending Pages: Deadline 1
Reese Comes (5)

What a day this has been so far! I got gas and then got in line to vote a Will Rogers by 6:55. There were already about 15 people in front of me. I voted and got to school by about 7:30.

During second period we prepared for our mock election. We had a ton of staffers participate and they were led by Stacy, Josh and Delaney.

I also took a few free whacks at the Casa car.

The Count

Perhaps the greatest aspect of the whole election activity was that the staff organized so well I din not even have to worry about it at all. What a joy that is.

Final Talley: 490 votes cast.
McCain 39% (192)
Obama 61% (298)

Reese arrived with Brian and we worked through the usual problems with the PDF generator and eventually we had our first pages ready to send. It took her over an hour to do all the installations and then get it all to work. She was on the phone with the WW computer services people for quite a long time.

Reese, Lauren, and Zoe.

Deadline One: 16 pages

Sending Pages Week
Jay Swetech Photo Processing Session

Today is the day we are going to finish at least the sophomore mugs and two sports spreads for a whopping total of 16 pages. And to think Westfield will have over 100 pages by next Saturday. We are doing something wrong here. Not really. But I would love to get more pages submitted early. It's just NOT the culture of how we do things I guess.

Jay did come at about 11:30 and we started by updating the software and calibrating the monitors. Jay used his Eye-One calibrator, the one Reese had recommended. It did wind up taking until after 12:30. Then we finally started working on photo correction strategies. Turns out he also brought his son, Shay and Robert actually stopped by.

Jay and Shelby

Jay worked with Shelby and Kim for over two and a half hours teaching them how to dodge and burn and do all sorts of amazing color corrections. It is so great to have an expert to lead us through the best process. There are always 20 ways to do things in Photoshop, but it's great to know what works best from a professional.

At 3:48 I flew out of here when I realized I had forgotten my visual field appointment at Mercy. I managed to make it an when I got back Jay was still here. I think he final left around 5:30

Zoe got back from practice and we kept working her 12 pages. At about 7:30 we discover that Lauren did not have things set up on a proper template and so she had to completely rework both spreads.

We also made final adjustments with the ladder so I think we pretty much have the ladder set too.
