Three editors
When it's all counted I think they did the full set of ID card three times. After the first set they realized that the handwritten text by Lauren was either too small or scanned improperly so it looked way too bitmappy. Then they finshed all of them first period today adn realized that each one was titled "Pass Press" instead of "Press Pass" so they did them all over once again.

The staff manual insides got one more proofing on Thursday night and then again on Friday morning. I ran them off during third period and then Kim and Lauren stuffed the binders so they would be ready to go fourth. I think it was during third they also finished all the covers.

Leads, Leads, Leads
Another Late Night

They each had to find five good yearbook leads in good yearbooks, then find three good leads in magazines and then write a lead about the person they are writing about.
Each needs to be labeled.

And then they were to type it up on our computers and then print and save it in their folder on the server. No one got quite to the computer stage.

We also made the breakthrough with our staff id cards and it looks like those might get done for Friday. I called Rita and Lifetouch immediately brought laminator poches since we were virtually out.

Late Night 2
Zoe and Lauren stayed after practice and then eventually Kelsey came back after she went to the State Fair. We got a close to final draft of the staff manual and they solved the resolution of the ID card issues. It really was a good example of how we roll at the Decamhian. "Good enough" is neither. We have to do things until they are right. Even the ID cards and the staff manual. We actually did not leave until close to nine Also apparently Zoe sent Shelby home.

Behind the Typeface: Cooper Black
Leads
Back to School Night

The class was only an hour long so we watched a couple of funny typography videos
on the internet.

Then I went over leads and had them pick out five great leads from quality yearbooks.

Back to School Night
Had a great crowd. A good number of new parents. One was a student at Mira Loma when I was there and was a yearbbok editor there under Joyce Hayward. (Nagle) Another was actually on the cover of the 1981 Decamhian, the one that looks like People magazine.

Our main font is chosen and in hand.
I also worked it out with My Fonts to allow us to buy the fonts even though we had apparently not paid last year's bill. Our main font of the year will be Univers designed once again by Adrian Frutiger.

Basics of Copy
Naming the Fish

Eventhough I was still having projector problems, I forged on and started teaching the basics of copy. Got the the point where we brainstormed questions and then we broke into pairs to interview and come up with an angle to write about.

Let's name them. Pica, Helvetica, Cooper, Frutiger, Century Gothic Black, Wingding.

Colors and Captions

Even though Zoe thinks it's “boring,” we did “Shades of Personality
in class today. She may drive me nuts if I don't get a little more cooperation, but it all went well anyway.
My projector is definitely going out so the colors were anything but true.

Week One Day Five: Friday, August 22, 2008

Week One Day Five: Friday, August 22, 2008
Radiohead at the Outside Lands Festival
San Francisco

Zoe and I drive to the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco to see Radiohead

The Background
I got started taking each of the kids to a major concert when I took Kate to see NSYNC in Philadelphia back in 2000 when we were on our family trip. In the summer of 2007 I took Robert to the Oakland Coliseum to see the Police. So it was Zoe's turn and we decided to go to see Radiohead at the Outside Lands Festival at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park.
The original plan was to drive with Zoe's friend from water polo, Ruthie Oliver, and her father. The mother would drive and then pick us up after the show. As it unfolded, they were not going to leave until 3:30 and as I thought about it it seemed like we would never get there early enough if we left that late. I could see we wouldn't get there until nearly seven with traffic and everything.

Getting There
Amazingly we left Sacramento just a minute or two before 12. We stopped at the In-N-Out in Davis for lunch. We made it to the 5th and Mission garage by 2:15 and we were on a #5 bus heading out to the park by 2:45. We stopped at the San Francisco Center to use the restroom and bought some Mrs. Fields cookies for the concert. It took about 45 minutes to get out there. We got out at Fulton and 25th Avenue. On the bus we met a guy form Scotland who came to SF and worked out his holiday around the show. He came in on Tuesday and even drove up and spent a night up in Sacramento at the Delta King.

Into the Festival
We walked into the park and into the festival and evetually found the Lands End stage at the far end of the Polo Field. This by the way was the same place I finished my first marathon in 1980.
We set up out blanket and chilled. I went first to check out the merch and bout a $35 Outside Lands Tshirt. I went to the restroom aand then went back and then Zoe went out and bought two shirts!

We take our claim to our spot on the grass.

Week One: Day Four: Thursday, August 21, 2008
Early Thursday
First late Night.

It was our first Early Thursday. We weren't quite as well planned. I tried to collect their good/bad caption exercises and very few did it correctly. We then did another caption exercise with the blocked punt exercise. Then the editors passed out their beat folders and then broke them into groups to explain how to get better quotes when they interview. They organized a party for tomorrow and then there was about 20 minutes left over.

The girls all came back after practice and we had our first late night. Zoe and Kelsey came first and then Shelby and Lauren came. Christine made shells and we had our first meal together. I think we may try to reschedule the late nights to Thursdays so Zoe can go to youth group.
I talked through a bunch of the process. I also talked with Ann Akers and she definitely wants to come if we can work out the dates

Christine brought shells for dinner.

Captivating Captions

Today we took staff photos with their animal drawings. Ellen and Lauren checked their first day interviews and quotable quotes. We finished passing out the secret pal sheets and I taught captions.
How many times can I possibly see that girl at the blood drive? Also the projector went wacky and looked all yellowy.

Secret Pals
Name Game

We started off by filling out secret pal sheets which took a good 40 minutes or so. Everybody loves thinking about what they might get from their secret pal. Then we got them working on their Name Game drawings (Stacey the Squatch, Lauren the Lumberjack, Kelsey the King Kobra with a Kilt, Maddie the Manta Ray, Zoe the Zwiebach (?), etc.) They were some of the best ever. Then we went through everyone reciting theirs and the ones that came before and then when they were done we all chanted "Hi …" In a creepy voice. It was all pretty fun and funny. Took us up to about twenty to three so we didn't really get a chance to check their interview quotes or start captions as planned.
