Week Seven: Day Thirty One: Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Homecoming Week
Tie Dye Day

I had the brainstorm of compiling all the "moments" the editor had written into a single document and let the staff read them and see what they though about the different way s they were written. I had given the editors the task of writing up one single meaniful moment that they hadd experienced. Some did it in first person and others did it as an interview in third person. Once they had read all of them they were to pick the one they thought was the best and then list five things about it that made it the best. Then they were to make another list of what they felt were the weaknesses in the others. For various reason almost all of them got votes, but it appears that the ones in first person were preferred.

Then I had each staff member try an write up one of their own moments and then type it up on the computer.

Homecoming Week
My Birthday

Today is Get Up and Go Day. At lunch we stared taking ID photos. Apparently we only got ONE useable varsity football p
icture.. In class we had a journal topic and then had caption practice.

Birthday moment
“OK I’m a big baby. I have to admit I look forward to my birthday to see what my yearbook staff will do to celebrate it. There have been some great ones. The year they camped out on our lawn. The TP jobs. The hats. I think the hat tradition started in 1999 with Jill, Ellie and Tracey. The angel wings, the pimp cane and the feathered boas. It is always a lot a fun and somehow it lets me know they appreciate me on a level beyond just being the teacher. I didn’t give it much thought this year but as fourth period approached I started to wonder what might be going on. Class started. We did our usual stuff…journal topic on Homecoming Week, caption practice. They even brought out a tiny cake that Shelby baked and we sang.

Shelby's cake.

It was also Steven Lagris’ and Maddie Nagle’s birthday too. In the middle of the period they even had me go to Mrs. Pierce’s office to talk about water polo (The game had been switched to a 7:15 start at Jesuit against Loretto). But when I returned…nothing. I thought for sure they had me leave to prepare for the party or something. But there was nothing. I’m sure I gave Zoe a cow-eyed look as if to say…”What happened? You couldn’t get it together? Did you really forget about me?” The period ended and that became the least of my worries as I misplaced my keys and Christine had to drive to school to give me a spare truck key
Eventually we came back and found the keys where I had left them at lunch and then it was off for a quick sandwich and the water polo game at Jesuit. We lost 9-3 but he girls played pretty well. Christine had insisted that we couldn’t eat afterward so we headed home immediately after the game.
When we got home I walked in the front door to see streamers and the whole living room dark. It was then I began to suspect something was up. Zoe appeared and I saw the rest of the editors and then the light went on and all the staff appeared and yelled “Surprise!”

They got me. I was totally surprised and we had a great party with over 20 staff members there. They gave me a trucker hat with long hair, a mullet wig, a drama queen pen and a multi-colored feather boa. Great job Zoe! Thanks for everything yearbook staff. You are the best! I feel loved.

Photo Training with Jay Swetech
Friday Night Football Against Ponderosa

This all came together quite quickly. I met Jay for the first time in the summer of 2006 when Zoe, Robert and Justine attended the Walsworth summer workshop at Sonoma State. Then we worked together again at the Hayward workshop in 2007 and then this year at Davis.
Last year he sent out a flyer offering a workshop to schools which I never got organized. This year I wrote it into the contract and worked it out with Reese although we will pay for his services and she will credit it back to us.

He arrived at about 12:45 and I just happened to be up in admin office so it was an easy connection. We decided to ave him do his workshop keynote for the entire class. It was an excellent overview of what he calls the tree easies.
1. ISO
2. shutter speed
3. f/stop

He said it would take "52 minutes" but it wound up taking nearly the entire period. the original plan was that he would work with Shelby, Kim, Claire, Cierra, and Hannah, but they all had to leave after school so Sara Noble and Maddie Nagle were able to stay so I asked them. Zoe also got a little instruction. They went down to the gym and even shot some indoor lighting stuff.
Between 4:30 and and 5 the first team began to assemble and eventually they all headed down to shoot the JV game.

Eventually they all got there and we had Shelby, Kim, Hannah, Claire, Hannah, Cierra, Maddie, Sara, and Zoe all shooting. Pretty impressive and they had a blast. The game was amazing too. It was tied 0-0 at half and they we went ahead 6-0. They scored and it was 7-6. Ponderosa scored again on a breakaway run and it was 14-6 with less than 3 minutes to go. We scored pretty quickly but missed the two point conversion to make it 14-12. We stopped them on a furth and one and then drove down for the final score and he game ended at 19-14. By far the greatest night game ever played at Cougar Canyon.

Crazy Zoe

The staff spent the period getting their first layout approved and then pasted up. Then they could start a second layout with pictures.

Reese comes to solve our problems
Since we installed the new enhancements on one of the computers, we have not been able to open some of the files we had previously created. Reese tried to trouble shoot it but since she had never seen the problem before she wound up calling computer services at Walsworth. Amazingly the technichian we got was Pam Englehart! So it was fun talking with her. Nobody reallt could figure out exactly what the problem was but we at least got the file to open when we took the plugins out of the Indesign folder and put them on the desk top

Watch out for Zoe

Reese still on the phone with computer services

First story assignments: sports

We began the class with a journal topic and then we assigned their sports stories. We had been discussing for a few days who would make the best pairs for the writers and helpers of the sports stories. The editors came up with a list and I made a few suggestions and they got a new draft done so we could make the assignemtns today.

We also gave them their design folders back because most did them very poorly, not having all the needed examples. The editors threatened that it would be worth 300 points and if they didn't do it properly they could lose most of the credit.

I was scoring teacher of the year applications at CDE
Sierra Shootout. Two wins

This was the third day I was gone and apparently things did not go exactly as I had hoped. As I drove up to school, two students were standing in front of Steve Kenyon's room and after quizzing them they had been there since 2:20 waiting for Kenyon to arrive. They had no note, Kenyon never arrived and apparently they had scammed Mr. Smith into letting them go.
I also later discovered they were apparently having a "Dance Contest" in the back room! Hmmmmmmm. Where was Mr. Smith?

Needless to say I am not happy.

Football Game Caption Practice
Theme Reveal

I had the whole staff write a caption of one of the photos from the football game. While I was doing that the editors met and decided to reveal the theme to the entire staff. I have never completel understood why the editors never want to reveal the theme to the staff. Mostly I think it's because they are afraid that someone will tell someone outside of yearbook.

First Visit by Reese
Night Game…Decamhian Blitz

Today was crazy. We started with secret pals. Then the staff was supposed to finish the second draft of their profiles and Reese was going to come by for the first time. And to top it off, Zoe was going crazy trying to get water polo practice together.
Zoe did go over every one's assignments for tonight ans then we just let the staff chill while we installed the new enhancements and Reese taught Zoe how to build a template and create mug pages.
You can see below that chillin' takes on various forms

Blaser in action

Ryan Blaser, beloved by women

At 4:30 the staff began to gather for the Night Football Blitz as the JV game started at 5. But by the time the evening was done we must have had at least seven photographers and ten writers covering the event.

In my summer workshops I talk about "interactive" coverage which is when you try to gather all information for a specific story on the spot, instead of trying to recreate what actually happened weeks after the event.

It was definitely a beautiful thing watching so many of my staff working so hard and having such a great time doing it.

Managing Editor Kelsey

September Birthdays at Lunch
At camp this summer the editors got an idea to bring in kids from campus who have birthdays in September and interview them to find new story ideas. They baked a bunch of stuff and even had ice cream and about 40 kids showed up. More than could really fit in the room. They actually got a few interesting story ideas and all the kids had a great time. Unbelievable how well it worked out and that they pulled it off so well.

Intro to Design
In class I started to introduce design to the new staff. I used my Design Basics keynote and asked them to bring an example of a design they thought was cool for tomorrow. I got through the
"good design in good design" part and through several if the principles. It is great to be teaching especially since yesterday went sooooooooooo slowly when we just let them work on their profiles.

Monday

Spent most of the day in front of the class. We had our first journal writing assignment on the first rally and the outside dance.

Then we went over several new photos and wrote a caption together on one from the rally.

Tuesday
We spent most of the period letting tem work on their stories. We had very little for them at the beginning of the class period so the period seemed to last about three hours.

5 + 3 + 1 Lead assignment

I had a two photos that Shelby had picked out to caption. One was from Back to School Night and the other was from Club Fair. Turns out that we really didn't have enough specific information to actually write the caption, but we talked about the quality of the photos.

Next Zoe gave her first style quiz and we traded and corrected them. No one did very well so
